Formulating Body Butters

Formulating Body Butters

Every season is Body Butter season!

We love the beautiful options available with anhydrous body butters.

We formulate rich creamy balms with essential oil blends, fragrances, and combinations of essential oils & fragrances.

Body butter can be formulated with pigments & shimmering micas.

Body butters can utilize vegan waxes and can also include honeycomb (beeswax) from local beekeepers.

Body butters can be packaged in eco-friendly tins & easy to use plastics. We pack body butters in glass jars too for a combination of high design & planet-kind design.

Body butters can have shipping challenges because some formulas melt at certain temperatures; this is common for anhydrous creams. Sometimes, beauty brands will ship un-emulsified body butters during cold/cool months only to maintain stability in texture during transport.

Carefully formulated & produced anhydrous body butters can withstand warm transportation temperatures, however, protecting the body butters with cold packs, insulation, & expedited shipping is still recommended.

Typically, you can rely on an approximate shelf-life of 12 month for correctly formulated & manufactured body butters. Even when water-free, oils & butters lose potency and freshness over time. Aerated formulas are more sensitive than melt & pour processes. You'll want to do full stability testing to validate your best-by parameters for each formula SKU, including packaging variations.

The manufacturing processes for body butters vary greatly and are partially dependent on their ingredient ratios & chemistry. Identical ingredients can have unique methods of manufacture and the resulting creams will be completely different.

Some of our favorite body butter ingredients include cocoa butter, mango butter, shea butter, camellia oil, and beeswax.

Due to their anhydrous nature, body butters are best when massaged onto damp skin. The rich oils, butters, and waxes seal in the moisture delivered by the water on your skin and makes skin glow-y and luminous.

Want to create self-care routines that include body butters? Develop a natural body polish using fine salt or sugar and design a set that features exfoliating & moisture sealing. Want to go a step further? Formulate flower-essence-filled bath soaks or aromatherapy showers and you've got a 3 product suite of body essentials that are sure to make your fans & followers always wanting more!

Remember how important your packaging graphics are for compliance & for high design branding. Our book, DIY Beauty Labels, is available on Amazon for your professional looking brand graphics.
